Visible within the moon and shadow
as its permanence depends on time
I see it broad and also narrow
ancient, still, immense, sublime
that confidante of Winter storms
the burdened soul bearer of my seasons
as the world evolves and transforms
it maintains its stance and withholds reason
I rely upon its hopeful leaning
and mourn the day which it might fall
as within its branches I see them preening
and in the Spring, hear mating calls
foliage shades me when Summer burns
dropping yellow as Autumn turns
the life it has, the life it sustains
I dread to see its cut remains
outside my window stands this tree
a glorious and divine respite for me
cease the structures, let no more arise
lest I'm resolved to witness this birch's demise
