I wonder where you've gone and why
as your willful presence is replaced
not by the languid, mulling tide
or a shallow love long since displaced
nor by the careless and arbitrary sigh
while I close my eyes to see your face
only to open them as I wonder why

Your words encouraged, your truth embraced
you made me laugh then dignified
the perplexities of my hiding place
and yet with all the grace inside
I am left here calling, wondering why
